It's almost time for the Tiki Lounge to close for the winter but we still have a few warm days now and then. D and I took advantage of today's weather to ride up to the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton.

The view was great but it was very windy when we got to the top. I moved the bikes in front of the building cause I was worried they would blow over!
Nice view

It was also cold. Here's D being cold.

OK, so it's been a while and I really haven't been keeping up on the blog since Bella was born. Anyway, here's what we've been up to since her birthday.

We celebrated Bella's birthday with everyone on March 20. The Tiki Lounge threw Bella a great bash, she even had her own cake!
MINE!

The sugar quickly took effect.
Ssssssuuuuuuugarrrrrrr

We went on a visit to the Oakland Zoo. Bella was still a little too young for the petting zoo area.
The Zoo

D's license was up for renewal so she decided to get a motorcycle license as well. She took the MSF course and it rained on the day of her test but eventually she passed.
D in the rain.

Her first bike was a Yamaha V-Star and she learned to handle it pretty quickly.
D's V-Star

Before we knew it, she was upgrading to a Harley.
D's Nightster

Oh, by the way, I got one too!
Scobobby's Fat Boy

Bella had her first visit to an amusement park and went on her first rides.
Bella's first ride!

She loved it, she only cried when they stopped!
Bella riding by herself!

Dad came to visit and we went to the Carmel Mission
Us at the Carmel Mission

and on the Niles Canyon train.
On the train!

We took Bella to the aquarium and she loved it! We could barely tear her away from the glass.
Bella at the aquarium

We made our annual pilgrimage to Hawaii around July 4th! The surf is pretty calm in summertime.
The North Shore

Over Labor Day weekend we went to Yosemite, Mono Lake and Bodie!

Finally, we went on our longest bike trip so far to Street Vibrations in Reno.

I've been told I am supposed to make more frequent entries to keep people up to date. Seems like summer just ended and now September is already gone too. Some time in August Bella started to laugh and giggle for real. Check out this video:

?

Over Labor Day weekend we went on another road trip. This time we went to Old Town Sacramento, Mount Shasta and Crater Lake.

D and I at Crater Lake

Ash at Crater Lake

Denise and Bella at Lake Shasta

Asheley turned 14 in September. We had a small gathering to celebrate the occasion.

Ash turns 14!

Asheley went to her first high school dance. I took pictures in the photobooth and tried to keep an eye on Asheley. It was better than any dance my high school ever had!

Ash at the rave

And Bella just keeps getting cuter!

Bella!

Well, I think so anyway.

Well, summer is over and a lot has happened since Bella returned from space and Denise's birthday so this is going to be a long post.

On May 17th we had Bella's christening. In retrospect, we probably should have had her baptised before sending her into space but NASA seemed to be in a big hurry.

Anyway, there were lots of people at the party and a good time was had by all.

Thanks to everyone who came and helped make the party a success.

We had a jumper for the kids at the christening. Turns out Hello Kitty had some surprises for us!

On May 23rd we went to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk with Papa, Nonnie and Alyssa. We had fun on the rides.

At the end of May, Rochelle and Elyssa came to visit. We went to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk again (you just can't go too many times!).

Rochelle said this was the first time Elyssa went on a ride by herself.

She looks like what we might call an "aggressive driver"!

We went shopping in San Francisco.

The girls went to Great America.

And we went bowling at Strike with Rochelle, Elyssa, Rick, Lea and Tehani.

Dudes got issues! Of course, he kicked all our asses in bowling.

In June, Bella started rolling over on her own.

Dad came to visit for a week. We took him to Napa and Half Moon Bay but mostly we just hung out.

Here we are at Rodney Strong vineyards.

Family resemblance?

The girls at Chateau St. Jean

On June 11th, Asheley graduated from CMS.

Congratulations Ash! We're so proud of you!

During the visits by Rochelle and Elyssa and Dad, we rented a minivan. We liked it so much we bought one.

In July, we took the minivan on a road trips to Big Sur...

and Mount Diablo.

We went north to see the giant redwoods with Uncle Frank, Auntie Debbie and Tehani...

and drove the new minivan through a tree.

In August, we went to Hakone Gardens and were underimpressed.

Nonnie took us to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk again (Thanks Nonnie!) and even Bella had fun!!

Really, she's having fun.

Bella started eating baby food.

And Asheley started high school.

That's it for now. We should have some new pictures in the gallery soon.

Isabella takes her first steps.... ON THE MOON!

In the first US moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972, Isabella became the youngest astronaut to walk on the moon.

Bella Luna

NASA scientists attribute this amazing feat to her intensive Space-Babies training and the Moon's gravity being one-sixth that of the Earth.

Isabella spent roughly 2 hours on the surface before returning to the Lunar Module for her 4 o'clock feeding. Her only apparent discomfort during the moon walk was due to the fact that she forgot to place her binki inside her helmet before sealing it.

Isabella is expected to return to Earth this weekend but not before becoming the youngest astronaut to perform an untethered spacewalk.

Stay tuned!

Exclusive NASA video of the start of Bella's first mission.

According to NASA engineers, a previously moth-balled Apollo rocket was used for this mission since there was only one astronaut aboard. Undisclosed sources indicate that the economy and budgetary constraints may have also played a role. Bella's parents main concern was that in the future Bella may only be able to fall asleep while strapped into an Apollo size rocket. The space shuttle would never do!

That?s right. Recent spy photos of Bella indicate she has enrolled in NASA?s top secret ?Space Babies? program. NASA is hugely selective about who it sends in to space and Bella?s parents are proud she has been invited to participate. The Tiki Lounge Staff fully support her aspirations to become the youngest astronaut in the history of space travel.

The proud parents!

Since the Mercury Seven were selected in 1959, over 41,000 people have applied to become an astronaut, yet only 321 have been chosen. Luckily for Bella, the training program has changed a lot over fifty years. No longer is it a prerequisite that you are a male aged 25-40, less than 5?11? tall, college educated, and a USAF test pilot with three years experience. Today women are also able to apply and civilians including teachers, scientists and even newborn babies line up alongside military-trained applicants.

The following photos show Bella in what are obviously various training and test regimens leading up to a mission.

Conditioning
Babies are used to receiving food in a space-friendly containers!

G-force and flight testing
Strapped in for lift-off!

Pressure chamber testing
Looking through a porthole.

The use of centrifuges has long since been abandoned with the advance of materials science. Highly adapted space suits have reduced the g-force side effects of vomiting, fainting and dirty diapers that accompanied launch and re-entry training.

Although we have been unable to contact NASA to confirm Bella has been selected for the program, via a confidential source we were able to obtain an advance copy of Bella?s official NASA photo.

It is with great regret that we have a second post mourning the loss of a family member. I met Tony along with his wife, Summer, when we were in Guam in March. I knew he was in the Navy but I was not aware he was being deployed to Afghanistan upon leaving Guam. I was shocked when Denise told me he had been killed when the vehicle he was in hit an improvised explosive device. I never served in the military but I have the utmost respect for those that do, especially in a time of war. For they all risk paying the ultimate price defending our feedom. Rest in peace Tony-Boy.

As for calling me "Uncle Bob".... Do I have a choice?

Let me tell a little story...

I remember at my sister's wedding there was this weird guy. He was from her husband's family (who are generally pretty normal people). It was just that the girls complained he danced a little too close for family. He was a bit odd to converse with too. He drank a little too much. He just kinda made you think "Hmmmmm."

We asked who he was and were told, "That's Uncle Bob! He's a little odd but doesn't every family have an Uncle Bob?"

So please don't make me the Uncle Bob of this family.

Members of a photography forum I participate in wanted find a way to collectively use the photographs that we were taking to help out a charity. The result is Shooting For A Cause: a set of four calendars using images donated by forum members. Five dollars from the sale of each calendar goes to help The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children?. (The rest of the money goes to CafePress to cover production costs.)

Anyway, long story short, one of my photographs (below) was chosen for the month of August in the Earth and Sky calendar.

Diamond Head and Waikiki

Incidentally, for all you Chamorros out there, the Sunrise Sunset calendar features a Guam sunset for the month of August.

I want to reiterate that all proceeds from the calendars are donated to the charity. Neither the forum, its members, the Tiki Lounge nor any of its staff receive any payment for use of the images or sales of the calendars.

Sincerest of apologies to anyone who had made plans for the Hawaii date but this was unforseeable and unavoidable.

Upon return from vacation Denise was noted to be sporting a sparkly object on her left hand.
Look closely at her left hand.

Through cutting edge image enhancement, we have confirmed she is wearing what appears to be an engagement ring.

When questioned regarding the rumors, the couple confirmed that they are indeed engaged.

Further details will follow as they become available.

Well, its October and that means Asheley-Fest 2006 is officially over. It was a busy month filled with steel drum music and parties.
Harry Best and Shabang

We had parent meetings for both volleyball and the school play on Ash's birthday. Papa Wayne came by and we had a small celebration.
Asheley's Birthday

That weekend the Tiki Lounge hosted a sleepover party with Ash's friends. They played lasertag and moved to Dance Dance Revolution.
Ash and friends

The following week the lounge hosted a party for family and friends. Chef Jay outdid himself. The menu included chicken kelaguen made with fresh coconut.
Kumyu

We also had beef kelaguen, red rice, fried chicken, BBQ spare ribs and more. There was plenty to eat and drink!
MMMMMMMMMMMM! BBQ!!!!

We had a full house. There were some faces we hadn't seen in a while and some who had never been to the Tiki Lounge before.
Dave, Frankie, Uncle Frank, Auntie Debbie, Asheley and Tehani

Everyone had a great time.
Lani, Lea and Tehani Jay, Anna and Jonas
Doreen and Ash Denise and Ash
Even the kids.

Ash-Fest concluded with the Central Mustangs inaugural volleybell game where they beat Jordan handily.

This week Chef Albert "Jay" Pangelinan taught us the secrets of making Chicken Estufao including how to chop the chicken without losing a finger.
Chef Jay
It has become apparent that cooking Chamorro food requires the consumption of large quantities of Bud Light.

We use only the finest ingredients here at Scobobby's Tiki Lounge. Everyday our staff visits local farmers to buy fresh produce.
Where's da mango?
Denise looks over some locally grown fruit.

Are you local?
What's the secret password?
Asheley mans the guard house to keep out the riff-raff!

Bring your friends, we've got plenty of parking out back!
Island Mini-Van
Try not to hog too many spaces with your pimped-out outrigger!

We've also added a video game parlor to the lounge with XBOX, PS2, and Gamecube.
It is a good day to die.
Island style Halo anyone?

It's a jungle out there!

Scoboby's Tiki Lounge is a little off the beaten path but we have plenty of bbq short ribs, red rice, kelaguen, Bud Light and island music. So it's worth the effort!

Jay at the grill!

Albert (Denise's brother) is teaching me to cook Chammorro style. So far we've made chicken kelaguen, red rice, finne dene and short ribs (I still gotta learn how to make the marinade). The bad new is I forget half of it every week. The good news is Albert comes back and teaches me all over again.

OK so I've been seriously remiss in updating any part of this site. But hey, nobody reads this anyway.

Anyway we've made some changes here at Scobobby's Tiki Lounge. We got rid of the smooth bamboo, it was just to slick looking. We've gone back to the rustic look!

We've also added some musical entertainment for island atmosphere. So turn those speakers up!!!

Smiles everyone!!!

Everybody limbo!!!

Ya Mon!

The old blog was looking tired so here's the new look. Let me know what you think. And, yes, that is bamboo flooring in the background.

OK... can't exactly remember the old one... (I did like the camera in a camera photo I opened up originally, though.) Do you really feel this one takes enough risks with the design elements to represent your true character? What's the story behind the bamboo? Is that on NTK priority?

The bamboo is an island thing! It used to be a more rustic bamboo. This is a cleaner more polished look. Check out aguaguat.com and chamorro4life.com (Denise's site).
